This year, my last year of high school, I have had the opportunity to reflect on my personal experiences coming of age and cultivating my own identity as a female. My goal has been to create a gallery showcasing works by emerging female artists speaking on their personal experiences growing up, deciding how to present (whether that be more traditionally feminine or more masculine), and finding their own unique voice. I want to pose the question ‘what is the perceived and presented role of young women in modern society’ and offer a unique perspective on the range and backgrounds of people identifying as female. I think, especially in male dominated industries like art, it is immensely important to spotlight and appreciate the works and experiences of women. I also think it is important to empower young women by giving them a platform to share their perspectives.
