This October, Cornelia Feye, former director of arts education at the Athenaeum, presents a series of 4 lectures on 20th century German art.
October 31 Lecture:
1945-1989: The Art of Two Germanys
Based on the exhibition of the same name at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2009, this lecture will focus on art from East and West Germany, two countries that shared a history, but developed two distinct political systems during the cold war era. East German artists produced Socialist Realist work intended to glorify the system. Meanwhile, in the West, artists like Beuys, Kiefer, Immendorf, Baselitz, Richter experimented with Neo-Expressionism and performance art.
