Madison Gallery presents Spatial Acuity, opening on September 22nd, 2018, featuring the work of Matthew Shlian Jason Sims. The exhibition examines the detailed exploration of perception, light and space.
Shlians work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawing and three-dimensional forms. Matthew uses his engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture, which has led to collaborations with scientists at University of Michigan. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principles; Matt sees their inquiry as a basis for artistic inspiration.
Sims is interested in the ways in which people create meaning in their lives how perception and choice directly impact our reality. His work seeks to explore what it means to exist, inviting contemplation of the structures in which we live, physically and socially.
