Date/Time
Saturday, April 21, 2018 – Sunday, April 22, 2018
9:00 am – 5:00 pm
In this meditative and fun class, you will be working with handmade textural ceramic tiles as well as a wide variety of glass tiles, glass gems, stained glass, mirror, and ball chain to create a 16” mosaic mandala. You will become immersed in the symmetry and flow of this circular form as the creating becomes a form of meditation.
On day one, we’ll discuss color theory and selection of color palette. Then we’ll go over design possibilities and you’ll see samples of how to incorporate materials into a visually appealing piece using a variety of textures, sizes, and shapes. Glass cutting skills will be taught. You’ll learn how to use sticky mesh for laying out your design, and how and why to use Wedi board as a substrate.
On day two, you will complete the design of your mandala, mix thinset mortar to set your piece on the wedi board, and then mix, color, and apply your grout. Using waterproof wedi board and high fired clay tiles will allow you to hang your mandala outside. You will also learn how to use special wedi washers for creating your hanger.
