CONCERT – Event Details
The San Diego Sound Project kicks off with the Montalban Quintet, a jazzy rock collective based out of San Diego. Featuring influences of post-punk, minimalism, jazz, 50s schmaltz, field recordings, and new western art music, a live show with the Montalban Quintet is an eclectic and soul-filling experience.
The live band features Chris Prescott (drums, electronics), Carl Prescott (trumpet), Kenseth Thibideau (bass, vocals), Jim Weiss (tenor and baritone saxophone), Rodrigo Contreras (piano), Greg Friedman (guitar, vocals), Julie Kitterman (glockenspiel, percussion, vocals). This talented group’s individual musical endeavors include: Pinback, Boilermaker, Sleeping People, The Jade Shader, The Mattson 2, Big Time Operator, No Knife, Systems Officer, Tanner and more. They have birthed all their recordings/collaborations at a small recording facility in Encinitas, CA known lovingly as the Belly of the Whale

The San Diego Sound Project
This concert series highlights emerging groups or artists within the San Diego region. The project is supported by an advisory committee that includes GRAMMY Award winning producer and UCSD faculty member Kamau Kenyatta, CSUSM Professor and Center ARTES Executive Director Dr. Merryl Goldberg, Grossmont College Music Department Chair Derek Cannon, Emmy Award-winning composer and MiraCosta College faculty member Christy Coobatis, and Connections Chamber Music Series Co-Founder Bridget Dolkas. The San Diego Sound Project has been made possible in part by The Conrad Prebys Foundation.
About the Artist – Montalban Quintet
The Montalban Quintet began with an accidental collision. The resulting train wreck is a collection of music a decade in the making. Over the past 20 years, I have always been a part of concurrent musical projects. This was primarily rooted in having extremely diverse interests. Through studying Jazz and "New Music" at UCSD, new intellectual possibilities became apparent to me. Working with repetitive tape loops and droning modes have been the foundation for a good deal of our music. I have been trying to take small bits of musical information and then tweaking it in ways to create expansive, yet often structured, forms. Some formal and/or melodic material comes from jazz masters, while other pieces lean heavily on the work of the minimalist movement. The instrumentation of the group relies heavily on horns and improvised sections, the Montalban Quintet is not a "jazz band" per se. The recorded loops that lie at the songs' foundation become a force in the rhythm section, adding tension at some times and solidifying the rhythmic pulse at others. The various academic explorations have combined with my past of touring and recording with post-punk/indie groups, ultimately helping to define the sound of the Montalban Quintet. Each member of the collective brings unique disparate elements and it's been a pleasure watching this thing shape over the past few years. – Chris Prescott

COVID-19 Mitigation Policy for Concert Attendees
The health and safety of our patrons, performers, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. The Museum has updated its COVID-19 safety protocols for all concerts taking place at the Museum of Making Music.
Effective immediately, concert attendees will need to do one of the following:
Vaccinated patrons will need to present proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, OR…
Unvaccinated patrons will need to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72-hours prior to the event.
Additional safety measures:
Concert hall capacity has been temporarily reduced in order to provide more space between guests.
Wearing a mask while in the building is required for all concert attendees regardless of vaccination status.
All guests will also be asked to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver upon arrival.

To expedite entry to the venue, documents can be e-mailed in advance to events@museumofmakingmusic.org
Proof of vaccination can be presented via vaccine card, photo of card, or Digital COVID-19 Vaccination Record from CA.gov.
If presenting documentation at the door, please bring matching photo ID.
Be aware that these guidelines may change by the time of the event.
